The latest addition to the KORG "micro" series serves up sampling with a powerful performance punch! The microSAMPLER delivers multi-mode sampling, resampling, Pattern Sequencing and over-the-top effects – and all under a fun-to-use intuitive interface. More than just a sampler, the microSAMPLER is a complete sound design studio for creating up-to-the minute loops and phrases.
At A Glance
All the controls on the microSampler are sunken into the lightweight, robust chassis which makes it extremely quick and easy to work with. It features a back-lit LCD screen which makes it ideal for working in your home, in the studio or even on stage. It boasts two recessed docks suitable for holding external sampling sources such as MP3 players. Nestled between these docks is an XLR input for use with the included gooseneck microphone (or any other microphone you may wish to use with it) which is extremely handy for recording live samples on the fly, such as short vocal stabs and authentic handclaps. There is a switch on the back for easily switching between the XLR input on the microSampler to an external 1/4" jack line input (stereo or mono), and also a gain knob to adjust the level of your input to avoid clipping. It also features one midi in connection and one midi out as well as a Type B USB port to easily drag and drop samples from your computer. Stereo/Mono 1/4" jack outputs (unbalanced) are also located on the back panel as well as a 1/4" jack headphone out.
Sampling
The microSampler boasts 5 different sampling methods each with its own advantages for extended creativity. They are selected by a sturdy knob which clicks into place each time the sampling type is changed.
The microSAMPLER hosts a solid complement of top-end sampling features such as sixteen-voice polyphony, reverse playback, editing operations such as Normalize and Truncate, and a Time Stretch feature that lets you change the tempo without affecting the pitch. Selectable sample rates of 48 kHz, 24 kHz, 12 kHz down to 6 kHz let you sample at rates beyond CD clarity or add in that Lo-Fi vintage vibe. And yet the microSAMPLER is also designed to be easy to operate. Each bank contains 36 samples (a maximum of approximately 160 seconds of recording time for monaural samples at a 48 kHz sampling rate) and sixteen patterns of sequence data; the microSAMPLER lets you store eight such banks in internal memory.
Sampling Time:
• 48 kHz: 160 seconds (mono) per bank; x 8 Banks = 21.33 minutes (max.)
• 24 kHz: 320 seconds (mono) per bank; x 8 Banks = 42.66 minutes (max.)
• 12 kHz: 640 seconds (mono) per bank; x 8 Banks = 85.33 minutes (max.)
• 6 kHz: 1280 seconds (mono) per bank; x 8 Banks = 170.66 minutes (max.)
Sampling Modes
Loop
When sampling in loop mode, the recorded sample will play back seamlessly for as long as you hold in the key it has been sampled on to.
One Shot
One shots samples will play once through when you hit the key they are sampled on to. This mode is excellent for recording single drum hits, stabs and even scratches.
Gate
This sampling mode records until you take your finger off the key.
Auto-Next
This mode automatically chops the input and assigns each slice to previously selected keys based on tempo.
Key Gate
This mode lets you slice a sample and assign the different chops to separate keys across the keyboard in real time during source playback. Great for switching samples up and making something totally different or even turning a drum loop into a drum kit!
microSampler Modes
The Korg microSampler has two modes, Sample mode and Keyboard mode. In sample mode, each sample is assigned to a different key and can be selected using the sample knob to add edit/add effects. If you switch to keyboard mode, the selected sample will be stretched across each of the keys and can be played chromatically allowing for diverse compositions.
Pattern Sequencer
The pattern sequencer uses an overdub operating style that lets you continually layer your performances. You can switch between patterns during playback for seamless performances. Up to sixteen patterns (16,000 notes per pattern or a maximum 64,000) can be stored in each bank.
KAOSS Effects Engine
Developed for KORG's KAOSS PAD series, the effect engine serves up a great selection of effects. They include traditional delay, reverb and chorus but also interesting effects such as the ring modulator and grain shifter, and even a Looper that comes straight from the Loop Recording feature of the KAOSSILATOR.
Editor/Librarian Software
By using the editor/librarian software for the microSAMPLER, you can easily manage a gigantic sample library that's all your own. You can back up sample data to your computer via USB, load samples into the microSAMPLER, and back up the sequence data. Importing and exporting of WAV/AIFF data on your computer is also supported.
