Any synth with the 'Prophet' name has a lot to live up to given its ancestry. Not many designers could hope to recapture the sound or feel of a synthesiser like the Prophet 5 but if you were going to put money on one man, it would be Dave Smith. Given that he was responsible for the design of all of the previous Prophet synthesisers and co-founder of the legendary "Sequential Circuits" he'd be a pretty safe bet. It should come as no surprise then, that the Prophet '08 sets new standards for poly-synths in the modern world. It has a sound quality to rival all of the 'classic' synths you care to mention but with none of the disadvantages. It's affordable (a trend that goes all the way back to Sequential Circuits' days) compared to the other fully-analogue poly-synths around right now and it's, well, it's just a joy to behold really. The Prophet '08 PE (potentiometer edition) has all the features of the standard Prophet '08, but many of the front panel's rotary controls use potentiometers (AKA "pots") for more "vintage-style" control. (The standard Prophet '08 primarily uses rotary encoders.)
