Akai have done a lot of really interesting products over the years (Hard Disk Recorders, Rack Samplers, Analogue Synths...errrr....MIDI Wind Controllers!) but these days they are probably most known for their classic Sampling Drum Machine range which started WAY back in 1988 with the MPC-60 and continues through to the ubiquitous MPC-1000 today. Their initial idea was to create a Drum Machine that you could put your own sounds into AND it was simple enough for even a Drummer to use (spending their entire career bashing bits of dead animal skins with two sticks doesn't give Drummers the most Tech Friendly of reputations).
These machines were quickly appropriated by the Hop Hop community and there's not a single Hip Hop or R+B start about today that hasn't cut their teeth on an MPC of one sort or another - they're also beloved of Techno live performers and Electronica boffins alike.
Moving on and into the future, Akai have firmly embraced the modern Computer Music beat makers with their range of MPK Controllers that give you USB Faders, Knobs, Keys and Pads to help unlock the power in your Software Synths AND they produced the first 100% Ableton Controller in the form of the APC40. Who knows what else they've got up their sleeve but everything they do lives up to the Akai Pro reputation of old.
