Californian company Aphex Systems have been in business since 1975 and are most well known for their signature product, the Aural Exciter.  This processor uses come clever Phase Shift and Harmonics to increase clarity in recordings and to emphasise the low end without actually increasing overall levels - basically your recording sounds louder without getting any louder on the VU meters.

When this piece of Voodoo magic was first released it was only available to rent but eventually it became a staple in many Home and Project studios across the land,  Aphex also license their technology to many other companies, either in software form or in terms of hardware (they make VCA chips and many other highly developed specialist audio components).

They also now produce a range of affordable guitar Stomp Box versions of the Aural Exciter and at the other end of the scale, make very high end Mic Preamps, Compressors, Headphone Amps and Digital Signal routers.
