A great British company with a long heritage in the world of Synths and Computer music, Novation was founded way back in 1992 by industry veteran Chris Hugget who had already done enough to win his Hall Of Fame status by developing the quirky Wasp and osCar Synth and writing the operating System for the Akai S1000 sampler.
Starting out with the fantastic little Bass-Station Synth (sort of an updated SH-101 and a TB-303 combined, which put real time control and ease of use above complicated menus and features) and then with the SuperNova, Novation quickly became one of the only UK Synth companies of merit before eventually becoming part of Focusrite in 2004.
As hardware Synths had been suffering for the pervious few years, Novation wisely refocused their efforts on producing USB MIDI Controllers and audio recording (sometimes combing the two to great effect in products like the X-Station) but, with the release of the Remote 25SL, they went back into overdrive again.
The Remote 25 had the "Holy Grail" of Software Control - Automap. Finally, there was an easy to use and affordable system that anyone could use that meant you didn't have to spend hours mapping every physical control on your keyboard to every parameter on your Software Synth...and then doing it again and again and again every time you added a new synth to your system.
Automap has won oodles of awards, continuing to be the best in its class and Novation have went on to expand the system with the release of their Launchpad controller for Ableton Live (designed very much in collaboration with the masters of real time performance themselves).
They also get a namecheck in a Wu Tang Clan track (Triumph) and you can't say that about many music tech companies!
