Artist: Auntie Flo
Label: Huntley & Palmers
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Future Rhythm Machine isn't a full length debut album, it is a body of work which draws on and demonstrates Auntie Flo's far flung influences which include African and Latin lessons in rhythm from the likes of Fela Kuti, William Onyeabor and Matias Aguayo, the refinery of Ricardo Villalobos and Four Tet and is charged with the instinctive energy from Kwaito and Chicago house. Also inspired by Black Atlantic diasporic culture and the writing of Kodwo Eshun, Steve Goodman (Kode 9) and Paul Gilroy. Featuring guest vocals from sultry Chilean singer Mamacita (whose own material is forthcoming on the label) and Glasgow's favourite South African, Esa Williams. Future Rhythm Machine was actually the first piece of work we'd heard from the Auntie Flo project (it was actually the catalyst for starting the label) and despite it being an earlier incarnation to what we now present, its originality still shines through and has stood up to (many) repeated listens. With only a few straight up club tracks, we hope you enjoy listening to this at home, in the club or on the move as much as we do. Kodwo Eshun talks about the 'futurhythmachine' where he disputes the western futurist pre-occupation with noise in favour of rhythm - it is the rhythm machine which joins the dots between all music of the black atlantic from Afrobeat and Highlife to Techno, Soul and Hip Hop.

Where The Helios is the real dream side. A floating, hallucinogenic, spaced out drift, driven by a crisp, pared back rhythm and a gorgeous, woozy vocal- led melody.

Artist: Mistakes Are Ok
Label: Hivern
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

The music of barcelonian producer Mistakes Are Ok is quite a mystery for us. It's strange, adventurous and enigmatic, impossible to define with genres or styles. Maybe that's the reason why we like it so much, or maybe it's simply that we find it utterly captivating. Mixing samples from the most diverse origins and reshaping them through all sorts of manipulations, he builds tracks filled with alien haze and odd beauty, with the kind of outlandish charm that emanates from all the music that dwells in a fully own cosmos. We're eager to share it with the world and soon we are going to release his debut album, which will be the first LP of Hivern Discs. As a prelude to the album, we've asked some of our favorite producers to remix three of it's tracks, with the particularity that the three of them share with MAOK the fact of having constructed their own per- sonal musical landscape. We're really flattered to have reunited Kassem Mosse (pairing up with his studio mate Mix Mup), Downliners Sekt and BNJMN in one same 12, in what we think is one of the best remixing line-ups we've had in the label. KM/ MM transform Best Before into a piece of opiatic techno weaved with swampy textures, underwater atmospheres and a lethargic tempo that drops under the 100 BPMs. A track from the depths with a haunting effect that keeps increasing with every listen. It's dark, it's sick, it's odd, and we love it. Downliners Sekt prove once again that they're one of the most personal and compelling acts of contemporary electronic music and serve a mind-boggling reconstruc- tion of Crumbs. Maintaining the hazy feel of the original, they infuse it with twisted dancehall vibes, apocalyptic chords and shady vocal samples to transform it into a dub-infected monster capable of caus- ing serious damage, especially if played in a proper soundsystem. Finally, UK burgeoning talent BNJMN smoothes the edges of the highly psychotic Koala and turns it into a soothing house cut that matches comforting atmospheres with bursts of eerie synths and sprinkles everything with dashes of fuzziness. The result is the most floor-oriented track of the pack but without loosing the singular and enthralling spirit that floats across the entire release.

Artist: Redshape
Label: 3024
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Major moves from Martyns and Erosies 3024 imprint who have enlisted Berlin’s Redshape for their latest release. A-Side ‘Throw In Dirt’ opens with vintage drum machines locked into a stooped groove as hi-hats spark off the top while a heavily filtered and pitched vocal loop offers dead eyed encouragement. An improbably girthsome analogue bass line curdles almost to the point of sinister before an unambiguously menacing fog of whining synths starts to descend while kick, snare & hats spark and simmer off one another. At the tracks peak another unsettlingly simple melody is played out on keys, before the whole ensemble rumbles over the horizon. After such an oppressive opener, ‘The Land’ is a noticeable change of pace. A horizon spanning kick underpins gospel’ish vocal snatches as the familiar hissing of synthesized cymbals shifts and builds on top of bass that’s more shudder than line. As these elements coil tighter around one another chiming pads build gradually, until the cymbal rush is momentarily halted, before redoubling it’s efforts as the synths become increasingly turbulent. A sudden shift into brighter chords and the arrival of some understated 808 textures push the track further into machine gospel territory and towards a resolution.

Artist: Black Rain
Label: Blackest Ever Black
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Black Rain was a project formed in New York City by Stuart Argabright of cult no wave / post-punk outfit Ike Yard. Originally conceived as an industrial death metal band, over time Black Rain was whittled down to a two-piece - Argabright and Shinichi Shimokawa - and began to focus on a more electronic, minimalist and rhythm-centric sound. Argabright and Shimokawa were commissioned to create an original score for Robert Longo's 1995 film Johnny Mnemonic. Black Rain's music didn't feature in the movie's final cut - something of a mercy, given what a turkey it turned out to be - but some of it found its way onto an audiobook edition of William Gibson's Neuromancer, and the tracks were later collected on the album 1.0 (Fifth Colvmn CD, 1995) This LP release on Blackest Ever Black is a selection of the best Black Rain instrumentals from those '94-'95 sessions: seven richly atmospheric, brooding rhythm tracks that together constitute a lost classic of post-industrial music, and a genuine cyberpunk artefact, remastered and cut to vinyl for the very first time.

Ahead of his debut album, Future Rhythm Machine, we'd next like to introduce the hotly anticpated remixes forthcoming on vinyl from Pearson Sound and newcomer SOPHIE. Stripping back the original Pearsons signature sound is all over Oh My Days and includes mix-friendly intro. Artist: Hype Williams
Label: Hyperdub
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

After three albums for as many labels, Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, also of the group Hype Williams, release their debut Hyperdub LP, 'Black Is Beautiful'. Amid rumours circulating, and confirmed by their advisor Denna Frances, the album was recorded during a tremulous period for the two : Inga Copelands Arsenal girls tryouts, Dean's 'Waschbrgate' trial (he was implicated in being behind a one night robbing spree across 16 taxidermists based in London and the South East, allegedly only for racoons) and his subsequent conversion to Nation of Islam upon being acquitted. 'Black Is Beautiful' is laced with their signature hazy glow and is full of crunched eurovision lullabies, kinetic drum machine jams, unsettling funk, smeared walls of synth, moments of unadulterated opiated bliss, mogadon rap, infinite coughs and insights into the odd sexual behaviour of crackers. The word EBONY occupies the albums entire front cover space in bold white print. Black Is Beautiful is red and white.

As per usual, Legowelt had some diamond patter to accompany the release, so rather than us telling you how good it is, we will let the man himself do the talking but trust is when we say than any record that’s described as “Raw as fuck autistic Star Trek 1987- Misty Forests- X-FILES,- DETROIT unicorn futurism”, is a record worth having.

The Come Back EP is another deadly round of deep, real dance music from the two New Yorkers, schooled in vintage Gotham and Detroit house and techno, freshly to the manor born driving, dub-wise, bare-bones, soulful, and melodic, by turns. Once again, don't sleep on it.

Artist: Actress
Label: Honest Jons
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Two dazzling, out-there contributions from the inimitable Actress: an immersive, slashing thumper, ecstatic and convulsive, multi-layered and head-nodding, just about getting Mars on the radio; and a kind of unhinged marimba and thumb-piano variation, grubbing around manically in half-memories of African polyrhythm.

<![CDATA[Demdike Stare - Elemental Pt.4 vinyl]]> http://www.rubadub.co.uk/music/electronica/elemental-pt-4 Title: Elemental Pt.4
Artist: Demdike Stare
Label: Modern Love
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

*Fourth and final EP making up the "Elemental" set, ltd to 1000 copies and pressed up on coloured vinyl* Demdike Stare sign off their grandest statement with the concluding fourth chapter of the 'Elemental' series, entitled 'Iris'. Across the previous three plates we've witnessed the sound dilate with uncanny physicality while their focus has become clearer than ever. Their ears have adjusted to the gloom of a dank and foreboding aesthetic, permitting them to navigate more freely between scattered sonic symbols and sampledelic apparitions. Enticed by the terrifying cello of death march processional 'Dauerlinie', the track rolls to its resting place, an abandoned warehouse space where a desolate 4/4 throb and demented, depleted bleeps just can't give up the ghost, before the beat recedes and leaves 'Dasein' lingering, longing for unknown pleasure in petrified, icy stasis. B-side, the majestic 'Ishmael's Intent' lends closure; clanking conveyor belt rhythms on an unstoppable trajectory into the oscillating jaws of LFO horror...

Artist: Xosar
Label: LIES
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Debut record by the cloaked, shadow-lurking underground figure Xosar, pushes forth into the realm of cosmic mysticism with a new style of occult-tinged public access house music. Through the three tracks the artist touches upon elements of U.R. styled hi-tech trance, UK bleep, and lo-fi chi-town realness creating cohesive and effective dancefloor cuts. Sure to spawn the interest of infidels, non-believers, and the clinically ill. Check! Check out the video - made by Marcus Mixx here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzzNTwgkegw !

<![CDATA[Nite Vision - Now Is The Time vinyl]]> http://www.rubadub.co.uk/music/house/now-is-the-time Title: Now Is The Time
Artist: Nite Vision
Label: Boe Recordings
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Now is the Time is a collection of works from Nite Vision, the result of two production sessions between a pair of electronic musicians heavily influenced by the pure analogue sounds and primordial brilliance and simplicity of the early house music pioneers. Craig Stainton and Nigel Rogers have teamed up to produce their first release together, exploring the deeper side of a shared love for early Chicago House music. This package is not a parody or imitation, it is as authentic and genuine as the sounds recorded by pioneers such as Virgo, Vincent Floyd and Mr Fingers. Nite Visions emotive sound carries on the lessons taught by these early masters, while remaining fresh and well defined. The double 12" is a selection of 9 deep raw house tracks that bind together to provide a true listening experience as well as having the jack to rock the dance floor and ethereal melodies to engross the mind.

<![CDATA[GoldFFinch - Red Mask vinyl]]> http://www.rubadub.co.uk/music/techno/red-mask Title: Red Mask
Artist: GoldFFinch
Label: Numbers
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Hiding behind their three character website is a Belgian duo called GoldFFinch whose steep vision of dancefloor techno marries loveable little phrases of awkward computer conversation with the kind of kick drums that’ll rattle the windows of your neighbour’s house when your soundsystem is tweaked perfectly. ‘Ovale’ proudly contains the kind of middle section switch up that just swipes chunks at you on the dancefloor. By replacing the woody texture of the kick with an aerated boom that works the lower frequency range, it’s a groove that swallows you whole, propelling you to embrace and celebrate the return of that top end toting kick drum. The A-side ‘Red Mask’ works itself around the same punchy kick but it ramps the propulsion factor up a notch; taking stock a little of the intensity of footwork’s drums and vocal chops, the Belgian twosome keep it grounded very much at a techno pace. A much more insistent drum beat will up the listener’s kind of fidgety neck spasms but behind the drum beat everything’s built a lot more subtly. There’s the bumbling acidic bassline, the extended reverberations of the vocal samples and then this little ominous sounding winding synth line that appears at the breakdown, rides the break for 8 bars and the returns as a ghostly incarnation of its former self. GoldFFinch may well be a duo bent on keeping things simple but when the end result, which is built out of such minimal layers, is so arresting, there’s no need to change the formula. Not one bit.

<![CDATA[Vakula - LELEKA001 vinyl]]> http://www.rubadub.co.uk/music/house/leleka001 Title: LELEKA001
Artist: Vakula
Label: Leleka
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Heralding the birth of the first Leleka is a limited edition, hand stamped, two-tone vinyl release from the label's owner Vakula from Konotop, whose name is widespread due to the success of releases on Firecracker, and recently Shevchenko (white labels with prints of Ukrainian literary celebrities such as Gogol, Lesya Ukrainka & Shevchenko himself). These are an ideally captured Ukrainian landscape of change, struggle, nature and art slightly embellished by industrial design of the 50's. And this is what the Leleka label is all about, its musical concept reflects Vakula's love of folk and live music, where passions and melodies play leading roles. This debut release contains six vintage tracks from Vakula, almost serving as a prologue to his recent epic output. The meeting of imported soul, exploitation movies and detroit techno, with Ukrainian folk melodies and Soviet electronics, offers a glimpse into Vakula's way of working, and gives us a taste of things to come...

<![CDATA[Blawan - What You Do With What You Have vinyl]]> http://www.rubadub.co.uk/music/dubstep-garage-funky/what-you-do-with-what-you-have Title: What You Do With What You Have
Artist: Blawan
Label: R&S
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Blawan returns to R&S with a superb new single. What You Do With What You Have is another step up for the young producer, following the Bohla EP and his huge Getting Me Down white label. It takes a fundamental message from some KDJ spoken word and twists it through submerged acid lines, trademark driving percussion and classic techno stabs. The way he works the vocal is simply amazing, and validates the fact that “It ain’t what you got, it is what you do with what you have.” Vibe Decorium on the flip is another twisted piece of acid house put through the Blawan blender, marking him out as one of the best producers around right now. As Mary Anne Hobbs says ‘He really is my favourite producer of the moment’. She has played What you Do… four weeks in a row ‘It is just such an inspired, raw and primal piece of work’.

Stunning second album from Martyn which in a rather cool move is on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label rather than his 3024 imprint. This record see's Martyn taking his sound into a more techno orientated direction and for us this is one of his strongest releases to date. A most enjoyable record and that you return to from time to time.

<![CDATA[Scuba - Adrenalin vinyl]]> http://www.rubadub.co.uk/music/dubstep-garage-funky/adrenalin Title: Adrenalin
Artist: Scuba
Label: Hotflush Recordings
Formats: vinyl

Sample Listing:

Hotflush Recordings presents the first new Scuba single since 2010’s landmark album, Triangulation. Since that release Scuba has concentrated more squarely on deep, epic house and techno via the SCB project, most notably with Loss released earlier this year on Aus Music. That focus extends itself to the lead track of this release, Adrenalin, which must be the most unashamedly dancefloor Scuba track to date, while b-sides Never and Everywhere take the well-documented fascination with melody that pervaded previous Scuba material to a new level.
